Originally from Illinois, I am a widowed, practical, intellectually curious, open-minded, liberal environmentalist; a spiritual adventurer who enjoys the outdoors, decent wine, green tea, good food, music, conversation, reading, writing and travel. I have been politically active on a local and national level in the past. I'm financially stable (not wealthy but comfortable), physically healthy (I'm 5'10" and weigh 185), mechanically inclined, good with tools and can repair nearly anything. I'm very practical and I don't blow money. I'm not overly materialistic but I'm certainly not Spartan. I live in a modest house and drive modest vehicles. Moderation in all things is my motto. I'm against waste and try hard to be non-pretentious.

I'm retired, still mourning the loss of my wife and best friend of 47 years who passed suddenly in June of 2009. I miss her terribly, love her deeply and always will, but I also miss female companionship and having someone to share life with.

I have read history, biographies, lay-science and philosophy (especially Zen, Eastern religions). I'm into history and Native American culture. I love Michel de Montaigne, Mark Twain, Karen Armstrong, and many more. I read very little fiction except for some classics. I like music (all kinds), attending concerts and the theater. I'm a member of The Frist Center, WMOT (NPR-Jazz), WPLN and of NPT. In recent years I've seen Paul Simon (WOW!), Joe Bonamassa, Garrison Kiellor, Levon Helm (RIP), Aretha Franklin, Jackson Browne and the Americana Music Awards at the Ryman. I'm a big fan of most classic rock music including The Band, Dylan, John Fogerty, Doo-Wop and early rock and blues. I like jazz and forties big band and on occasion, classical. Hell, I like almost all music.I am a fan of Annie Sellick and the Nashville Jazz Orchestra and The Nashville Jazz Workshop. My son has an extremely good classic rock and roll band that I help keep busy. They stay steadily booked and play Nashville's entertainment district and various other venues around the Nashville area.

As a social and cultural statement I recently got rid of cable TV because I'm insulted by the crass stupidity of most programming and only watched HBO, Big Bang Theory, Family Guy, Seinfeld, Letterman, etc. I have Roku as an alternative and stream MLB TV plus I get local and Network Channels via a rooftop antennae. You remember those?

In my early life I was a hiker, spelunker and canoeist. Camping, canoeing and hiking have been important in my past (not in recent years). I recently bought a fishing kayak. I'm not into golf. I'm a big St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and occasionally watch football and other sports. My wife and I traveled the US and Hawaii, have visited Italy, Mexico, various Caribbean Islands (via Sea Cruise) and I would like to go back to Europe, visit Pompeii/Sorrento, Italy, Greece, the pyramids in Egypt and perhaps South and Central America. I like ancient/ historic sites and most food, especially vegetables, rice and seafood. My wife was a great cook, I'm getting better.

Favorite quotes: "Verily, lying is a cruel and detestable vice. What holds us together as men if not our word? If we knew but the power and the weight of it we would pursue the same and more justly than any other crime." ~ Montaigne. And: "What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do." ~ John Ruskin.

A first meeting might be a casual place for a drink or snack or perhaps a visit to an art exhibit, bookstore cafe, or somewhere quiet where we could talk and get acquainted. Maybe a telephone chat to start.

I prefer someone who is honest, unpretentious, rational, open-minded, reasonably intelligent, straightforward, attractive, not too full of themselves, and who is sexually uninhibited; a physically active, health-minded person who is not a yes-person but likes to question and debate. No conservative right-wing, white supremacist, religious fanatics please. If you think Sarah Palin would make a great president or you are into Fox Network, Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, etc. in my opinion you are antithetic to reasonable human intelligence and everything I believe in. Christian-Lite and other religions are okay as long as you are temperate and authentically devout (no evangelical, Christians-have-more-fun, big dangling crosses, persecution seeking, Jesus-is-my-lord types). I was raised in the Lutheran faith and occasionally attend the local Presbyterian church where I have a few friends, however I tend to agree with Einstein who said,"I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings". An interest in history, Taoism, Zen or the teachings of the Buddha is a plus. If you know who any of the following are without researching them: Richard Brautigan, Richard Dawkins, Thomas Cleary, Shree Rajneesh, Richard Feynman, Jalaluddin Rumi, Carlos Castenada, Dorothy Parker or Ken Wilbur - you really interest me. If you identify your self-worth with money, material things and are status-minded we won't mesh. I strongly prefer widows since they can relate to my experience and, like me, were fatefully thrust into a grievous life of living alone. I can understand one divorce but if you've been divorced two or three times that speaks volumes to me. We very likely wouldn't mesh unless you have a valid explanation - which I'd love to hear.
